KISSIMMEE, Fla. ? South Dakota State opened its second day of play at the Rebel Spring games with a loss to La Salle, but rebounded nicely behind sophomore Jenna Marston to beat Tennessee State in the second game of the day.
The Jackrabbits fell behind in the second inning against the Explorers in the first game of the day, when Laura DeZolt led off the inning with a solo homer.
La Salle added one run in the sixth to make it 2-0 before the Jacks tried to make a comeback in the seventh.
After reaching on a fielder's choice, Jessica Vineyard advanced to third on a Kiley Schwedhelm ground out before stealing home for the Jacks only run.
The rally fell short after that, thus snapping the Jacks win streak at three games.
Box Score vs.La SalleMartson scattered three hits, while striking out six and walking none in a complete game shutout against the TSU Tigers (15-4) on her way to her third win in four decisions so far this season.
The run support started in the second inning when Kiley Schwedhelm opened the frame with a leadoff single to center and advanced to second on a throwing error.
Samantha Heinzman drew a one-out walk, which brought up Teresa Howell, who smacked an RBI single into right scoring Schwedhelm for the 1-0 lead.
That would be the only run Marston needed, but her teammates gave her two more insurance runs in the sixth.
Brooke Postma advanced Maggie Eilers, who pinch ran for Denise Leon, to second with a sacrifice bunt. Steph Kuhl came up with one out and hit a pinch-hit single to advance Eilers to third. Kuhl advanced to second on the throw. Heinzman then singled home Eilers and Kuhl to pad the Jacks lead at 3-0.
Marston closed out the game by striking out the final two Tiger batters.
The Jacks, who improve to 5-7 with the win, return to action on Thursday with games against future Mid-Continent opponent IPFW at 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CT) and Holy Cross (Mass.) at 3 p.m.
