NASHVILLE, TENN. — The South Dakota State men's tennis team picked up two victories against Tennessee State Tuesday. The Jackrabbits blanked the Tigers, 7-0, in the first match and then recorded a 4-3 victory in the second.
"Both teams came ready to play from the first ball, which was awesome to see," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Our trip has had multiple venue and time changes due to the weather. In that situation, it can be easy to lose focus, and I am happy with the way we approached today and adapted the way we needed to in order to play our best tennis."
In the first match, South Dakota State swept the singles matches and won the doubles point. Playing at first singles for the first time this season, Parker Lawley defeated Darryl Hale in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Mateus Moreira, Lovro Curcija and Marco Paulo Castro also scored singles victories in straight sets.
In the second match, after the Jackrabbits won the doubles point, the Tigers rallied to win three singles matches. But, behind wins by Henrique Pereira and Stefano Blatt at second and fifth singles respectively, and thanks to an injury forfeit, they hung on for the win, lifting them to above .500 on the season at 6-5.
South Dakota State returns to action tomorrow, taking on Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala. at 1 p.m.
NOTES: Blatt's win was his first collegiate dual win ... Lawley had played at third singles the previous five matches ... The Jackrabbits haulted a three-game skid with their two victories ... South Dakota State's match against North Alabama in Florence, Ala. was canceled due to weather.
