VERMILLION, S.D. - South Dakota State jumped fell into an early 5-0 hole that they could not dig out of, as the Jackrabbits closed the regular season with a 12-4, five inning loss at South Dakota on Sunday in Vermillion.
The Jacks end the regular season with a 22-27 overall record and a 7-11 mark in Summit League play, making them the No. 5 seed at the league tournament, which begins on Wednesday in Fargo, N.D. The Coyotes earned the No. 2 seed with a 13-4 record in league play to go along with a 26-23 overall record.
The hosts used five hits and one SDSU error to plate five runs in the second inning to take an early 5-0 lead, but the Jacks bounced back with four runs in the third to cut the lead back to one at 5-4.
Jessica Markanich got the Jacks on the board with an RBI single that scored two runs, one unearned. Two batters later, and after a pitching change, Elyse Eitel extended her single-season doubles record to 19 with a two-RBI double to the gap in left center that got the Jacks within one at 5-4, but the rally ended with Alyssa D'Agostino getting thrown out at home to end the inning.
USD came back with three in the bottom of the third, and then added three more in the fourth and the only one they needed in the fifth to end the game.
The Jacks look to get back on the winning track at The Summit League Championships on Wednesday, when they take on No. 4 seed Western Illinois at Ellig Sports Complex in Fargo at 3 p.m.
