Facing a must-win situation to keep its postseason hopes alive, South Dakota State rallied from a 4-0 deficit to earn an 8-5 victory over North Dakota State in the finale of a three-game Summit League baseball series Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

The Jackrabbits improved to 19-27 overall and 10-15 in league play by salvaging the final game of the series. NDSU, which won two one-run games to begin the series, dropped to 18-26-1 overall and 13-10-1 in The Summit League.

The SDSU comeback began with a three-run sixth inning that started when Luke Luskey reached on an error. Luskey came across on a single by Cade Stuff and Dawson Parry scored when Jess Bellows was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, leading to the removal of Bison starter Landon Koenig. The final run of the frame came when Adam Benes beat out a potential double-play grounder, allowing Stuff to score.

Luskey started a five-run rally in the seventh inning, when SDSU sent 10 men to the plate. After Luskey was hit by a pitch with one out, Cael Frost and Parry both drew walks to load the bases. The tying run scored when Stuff was hit by a Julien Hachem pitch.

Hunter Rosenbaum then entered in relief for NDSU and proceeded to give up three consecutive singles that resulted in four more Jackrabbit runs. Jordan Sagedahl plated the go-ahead run and Jess Bellows followed with a two-run single to right field. Adam Benes capped the rally with a single up the middle.

Sagedahl and Stuff each tallied two hits to lead the Jackrabbits' eight-hit effort.

NDSU cut the deficit to 8-5 on a solo home run by Sam Canton in the top of the eighth, but Jackrabbit reliever Sam Schlecht came on to retire all four batters he faced to pick up his first save of the season.

Koenig held the Jackrabbits in check for the first five-plus innings, striking out three and walking two.

SDSU starter Owen Bishop allowed two runs in the first inning on an RBI double by James Dunlap and a two-base outfield error. The Bison added to their lead with single runs in the third and sixth innings, with the sixth-inning tally unearned.

In 6 2/3 innings, Bishop scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked one.

Canton and Cadyn Schwabe each tallied two of NDSU's nine hits. Canton homered in each of the three games in the weekend series.

UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits close out the regular season by hosting Omaha in a three-game series May 16-18 at Erv Huether Field. Thursday's series opener is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
