VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota State softball team's longest winning streak since 1996 came to an end on Saturday at eight games, as the Jackrabbits dropped both games in a doubleheader at South Dakota, falling 9-2 in the opener and 12-3 in the nightcap.
The losses drop the Jacks to 22-26 overall and to 7-10 in The Summit League, while the host Coyotes improve to 25-23 overall and to 12-4 in league play, which locks them into the No. 2 seed at next week's Summit League Tournament in Fargo, N.D. Picked to finish last in the preseason poll, SDSU secured either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed at the tournament.
South Dakota scored the first runs of the day, plating six in the second inning, adding a single run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 9-0 lead after four complete.
The Jacks got on the board in the fifth with an RBI double from Jessica Markanich and an Alyssa D'Agostino sacrifice fly, but would not score the rest of the game.
D'Agostino opened the scoring in Game 2, smacking her 10th home run of the season to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Still 1-0 Jacks in the third, SDSU got an RBI single from Markanich and an RBI double from D'Agostino to increase the lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third, when the Coyotes got one back to cut the lead to 3-1 after three complete, the first of 12 unanswered runs for the Coyotes, who added four in the fourth and seven in the fifth to end the game via the eight run rule.
The Jacks look to avoid the series sweep and end the regular season on a winning note on Sunday, when the two teams meet at 11 a.m.
