Game Notes |
South Dakota State travels south to close out the 2024 regular season and the Summit League slate. The Jackrabbits take on Omaha beginning with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, followed by an 11 a.m. single game Saturday, at the Mavericks' Connie Claussen Field.Â
Â
The Jackrabbits sit atop The Summit League regular season standings with a 13-0 record. Directly behind them are the Mavs who are 12-3 in conference play. SDSU can claim the league's regular season title with one win over the course of three games in Omaha. A three-game sweep by the hosts would hand the regular season championship to the Mavs. SDSU has won the last three Summit League regular season crowns.
Â
SDSU and Omaha have squared off in the last three Summit League Championship games. The Jacks had to defeat the Mavs twice in tournament play en route to titles in 2021 and 2022. Omaha beat SDSU, 1-0, in Brookings for the 2023 title. The Mavs hold a 69-38-1 record over SDSU all-time, but SDSU has won 16 of the last 19 meetings.
Â
The Jackrabbits sit at 30-18 overall. SDSU takes a 17-game winning streak into the weekend. That stretch is the longest active in Division I softball with Florida State (14), Texas (13) and Michigan (13) trailing the Jacks.
Â
SDSU continued its unblemished ledger in Summit League play this past weekend with a doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas. The Jacks won game one, 5-2, boosted by an
Emma Osmundson three-run home run. SDSU then capped the two-game set with an 8-0 run-rule victory.
Shannon Lasey pitched a shutout while the Jacks had 10 hits which included a three-run home run by
Brooke Dumont who accounted for four RBIs in the game.
Â
The Jackrabbits are off to a double-digit game undefeated start in Summit League action for the second straight season. SDSU has won 46 straight league games in regular season action dating back to the 2022 season. Following Oklahoma's series defeat at the hands of Texas a couple weeks ago, SDSU gained control of the longest active streak of regular season conference wins in Division I softball.
Â
The past week was highlighted by several Jackrabbit standouts, but Lasey and Osmundson were honored as the conference's co-Peak Pitcher and Performer of the Week. Their honors included a 7-0 midweek victory over Minnesota. Lasey produced two complete-game shutouts in the circle for SDSU. Osmundson was a combined 5-for-9 hitting four doubles, a triple and an RBI double.
Â
SDSU has been carried at the plate this season by the players that make up the top three spots in its order for a majority of its season. Osmundson,
Mia Jarecki and
Lindsey Culver all have taken turns carrying the Jacks with their bats. Culver leads The Summit League individuals in batting average, slugging percentage, and home runs. Osmundson leads the conference in doubles (17), which is 14th in the country, and sits atop the league in runs batted in. Jarecki is the league leader in runs and second in hits and batting average.Â
Â
The Jacks continue to get strong pitching in Summit League play.
Tori Kniesche ranks among the top 20 individuals in Division I in shutouts, strikeouts and hits allowed per severn innings. In league play she's 8-0 with a 0.40 ERA. Lasey is 4-0 in conference action with a 0.90 ERA in five starts.
Â
The Jackrabbits return to Brookings next week to play host to the 2024 Summit League Softball Championship from May 8-11 at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.Â
